What should you do after a car accident?

On Behalf of Newbern Law Firm | Oct 19, 2023 | Car Accidents |

The moments following a car accident can be quite hectic, which might prevent you from making good decisions. However, it is important to conduct yourself appropriately to ensure the best possible outcome.

Along with ensuring your safety, the right steps will also help you pinpoint any negligent actions that may have contributed to the crash.

Check for injuries

The safety of all parties involved should be your top priority, so immediately check for injuries. If there are injuries, call 911 and request medical assistance. In case of a serious accident, wait for the authorities to arrive before moving vehicles.

Exchange information

After ensuring safety, exchange information with any other drivers involved. Gather their name, contact information and insurance details, and provide your own information as well.

Document the scene

Take pictures of the accident scene, including vehicle damage, license plates and the surrounding area. This photographic evidence can be valuable when filing an insurance claim.

Gather witness statements

If there are witnesses to the accident, request their contact information, and ask if they would like to provide a statement. In the event a driver disputes claims of negligence, witness testimony may support your side of the story.

Notify your insurance company

Notify your insurance company as soon as possible to report the accident. Provide them with all the information you have gathered, including photographs. Keep in mind that timely reporting is often a requirement in insurance policies.

Do not admit fault

While it is important to cooperate and provide information, avoid admitting fault. The determination of fault is typically made by insurance adjusters and, in some cases, the legal system.

Seek medical evaluation

Even if you do not feel immediate pain or discomfort, you should see a healthcare professional after an accident. Some injuries may not manifest symptoms right away, and early detection is vital.

Maintain records

Keep a detailed record of all expenses related to the accident, such as medical bills, car repair receipts and any other costs incurred due to the collision.

As reported by Forbes, 1,593,390 injury-causing car crashes took place in 2020. While auto accidents are most often stressful, knowing the right approach can alleviate some of the anxiety involved.
