How weather conditions impact road safety

On Behalf of Newbern Law Firm | Dec 9, 2023 | Car Accidents |

Weather conditions impact the safety of the roads.

Whether they are new or seasoned drivers, everyone on the road should understand how different weather patterns can affect driving

Rainy days

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, motor vehicle accidents caused 42,795 deaths in 2022, and adverse weather conditions caused many of these accidents. Rain is a common weather occurrence that significantly affects road safety. The moisture on the road creates slippery surfaces, making it harder for tires to grip the pavement. Rain also reduces visibility.

Snow and ice

Winter brings its own set of challenges, especially in regions with snow and ice. Drivers should exercise increased caution on snow-covered and icy roads. Driving at lower speeds, using snow tires and avoiding sudden movements can prevent skidding and accidents. Clearing snow and ice from vehicle surfaces before hitting the road is a legal requirement and contributes to overall road safety.

Foggy conditions

Fog can drastically reduce visibility on the road. Drivers should use fog lights when necessary and avoid using high beams, as they can reflect off the fog and further impair visibility. Drivers need to slow down and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them in foggy conditions so they can react promptly to unexpected obstacles.

Windy weather

Strong winds can create challenging driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles like trucks and buses. Wind can affect vehicle stability and steering control. Drivers should maintain a firm grip on the wheel, remain aware of the potential for sudden gusts and adjust their speed accordingly. Extra caution is needed when passing through open areas where the wind’s impact is more significant.

Drivers can reduce their risk of accidents and improve safety by adapting their driving behavior to accommodate the weather.
