Going over distracted driving risk factors

On Behalf of Newbern Law Firm | May 29, 2024 | Car Accidents |

Distracted driving is a serious issue that poses a significant risk to road safety. It refers to any activity that diverts a driver’s attention away from the primary task of driving.

There are several common risk factors associated with distracted driving that everyone should be aware of to help prevent accidents on the road.

Phones and food

One of the most prevalent risks is the use of mobile phones while driving. Texting, making a call or using social media takes your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel and mind off driving. It is important to remember that no message or call is worth risking your safety and the safety of others on the road. Sadly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that distracted driving collisions claim roughly 3,000 lives every year.

Another risk factor is eating or drinking while driving. Many people underestimate the dangers of eating behind the wheel, but taking your hands off the wheel to grab a snack or spilling a drink can lead to a loss of control of the vehicle. It is best to eat before you start driving or pull over in a safe location to enjoy your meal without distractions.

Music and passengers

Adjusting music or navigation systems is also a common distraction while driving. Fiddling with the radio, changing a song on your playlist or entering a new address into your GPS can take your focus away from the road ahead. It is important to set up your music or navigation before you start driving and make any adjustments while parked or at a red light. Conversations with passengers can also be a risk factor for distracted driving. Engaging in deep or emotional conversations can divert your attention from the road and impair your ability to react to potential hazards.

By being aware of the common risk factors, drivers can be more responsible and focused on the road. Remember, safety should always be the top priority when behind the wheel.
